How to Stay Safe While Trucking in Holiday Traffic (and Weather)

A wintry mix and the holiday rush can lead to a rough road for doing your job. The inclement weather conditions on the road create driving hazards that require extra attention during the winter months. When traffic volumes increase around some of the major travel holidays, it makes driving safely even more difficult. Remaining cautious and being prepared to make quick decisions when confronted with wintery weather, it’s important to be constantly aware of your surroundings, the weather and the flow of traffic.

Driving in traffic and inclement weather can be difficult and dangerous enough for everyday drivers. If you’re on a long-haul trek in your large truck, this can be even more hazardous. Ensure that you have sufficient truck insurance and make sure to practice the following defensive driving techniques.

Remove Ice & Snow

Clear your windows and roof of snow to ensure you have maximum visibility and avoid creating a hazard for vehicles near you. Do not allow ice and snow to create additional blind spots on your vehicle.

Slow Down & Buckle Up

The chances of a crash nearly triple when driving faster than surrounding traffic. Skidding becomes more likely at increased speeds, especially on icy roads. A safety belt will not prevent a collision, but it will save a life.

Never Drive Impaired

Driving is a great responsibility and your fellow travelers are relying on safe, attentive drivers to respectfully share the road and make good decisions. Trucking operations must enforce a price policy on this matter.

Everyone should report drunk drivers and stay on the line to help locate the suspected vehicle, as this can save lives. Erratic braking, weaving between lanes, straddling the centerline or taking excessively wide turns can all be signs of impaired driving.

However, impaired driving doesn’t just refer to driving under the influence. If you haven’t slept well and have been on the road for hours or days on end, make sure that you’re still alert enough to safely drive.

Be Aware of Blind Spots

Trucks deliver all of the favorite holiday traditions, so this is most likely a busier time of the year either for you or just out there on the roads. Drivers should pass other trucks on the left where the truck’s blind spot is much smaller.

Keep Your Eyes on the Road

Distracted driving is a major cause of traffic accidents. Even just two seconds of distraction time doubles the chances of an accident. Only use your cell phone when stopped and never text while driving.

Prepare for Long-Distance Travel

Before you head out, check your wipers, fluids, radiator, and cooling system. Simple maintenance before you leave can prevent many issues.

The vehicle needs maintenance and the driver needs plenty of rest and hydration to function at their best. Drowsy drivers should pull over and wait until they’re more alert.

Leave Early & Avoid Risks

Leave early to reduce anxiety about arriving late. Road conditions may change due to inclement weather or traffic congestion.

Remain Cautious of Vehicles Ahead

With the extra slippery roads, it is that much more important to leave extra room between you and the vehicle ahead.
